How to mass unsubscribe in Gmail

Gmail has three built-in ways to cut mailing lists: a dedicated Manage subscriptions page, an Unsubscribe button on individual messages, and search operators that let you select hundreds of messages at once and filter the senders behind them.

1. The Manage subscriptions page

This is the fastest route. Gmail lists every sender that mails you on a list, sorted by how many messages they sent recently, with an unsubscribe button on each row.

1. Open Gmail on the web and expand the left navigation menu.
2. Click Manage subscriptions. If you do not see it, click More first. On the Gmail mobile app, open the menu and look for the same entry.
3. Work down the list. Each row shows the sender, how many emails they sent in the last few weeks, and an Unsubscribe button.
4. Click Unsubscribe. Gmail sends the request on your behalf. Most senders stop within a couple of days.

2. One-click unsubscribe on a message

Open any list email. Next to the sender name at the top, Gmail shows an Unsubscribe link when the sender supports the standard List-Unsubscribe header. Click it, confirm, done. No need to scroll to the footer.

If the link is missing, the sender did not include the header. Scroll to the bottom of the email for the footer link instead, or use the block or filter options below.

3. Bulk delete and filter with search operators

Unsubscribing stops future mail. It does not clean up what is already there. Search does that.

• unsubscribe finds nearly every marketing email, because they all contain the word.
• category:promotions older_than:30d finds stale promos.
• from:sender.com finds everything from one domain.
• label:^unsub is Gmail's hidden label for list mail. Try it.

1. Run the search.
2. Tick the select-all checkbox above the list, then click Select all conversations that match this search to go past the first page.
3. Delete or archive them all.

Turn a search into a filter

1. With the search still in the box, click the options icon at the right of the search bar.
2. Click Create filter.
3. Choose Skip the Inbox, optionally Apply the label, and tick Also apply filter to matching conversations.

This is the right tool for notifications you need but do not want in your face: receipts, GitHub activity, calendar responses.

4. Block senders who ignore unsubscribes

Open a message, click the three-dot menu, choose Block. Future mail goes to spam. Use Report spam as well if the sender never had permission in the first place; enough reports and Gmail deals with them for everyone.

What Gmail cannot do

Gmail cannot unsubscribe from senders that skip the header and hide the footer link. For those, block. And nothing in Gmail requires giving a third-party app read access to your mailbox, which is what most "inbox cleaner" apps ask for.
